Some tips on choosing a care home

Posted on 15 March 2011

Choosing a care home can be a difficult task, but one newspaper has provided a few tips on how to make the right decision for your loved ones.

The Daily Express said nine out of ten of the UK's 24,000 care homes are privately run, as local authority homes are increasingly disappearing as budget pressures increase.

Lawrence Tomlinson, who runs Ideal Care Homes, said there is a need for the whole system to be changed to improve quality and raise standards.

Offering his advice to readers choosing a care home, he said: "Do your homework. Visit at least two or three and see if they have a homely feel.

"Call the home and if it takes ages for the telephone to be answered that's not a good sign."

Recently, the Daily Telegraph said that some websites can help people to pick the most appropriate care home, as well as revealing what benefits users may be entitled to.
