Hounslow 107-year-old protests against day centre cuts

Posted on 09 March 2011

The oldest woman in Hounslow is making a stand against cuts to local services for older people, which may affect those paying for care in the town.

Rose Bickness, 107, uses Heston House Day Centre in Vicarage Farm Road twice a week, the Hounslow Chronicle reports.

However, the centre has been earmarked for closure alongside the Chiswick and Bedfont day centres, with Heston to make way for a new facility for dementia sufferers.

Ms Bicknell told the newspaper: "I depend on this service, I would never go out at all if it shut.

"I've been going there for nearly nine years and I would like to carry on."

A spokesperson for Hounslow Council said there has been a "considerable" reduction in the number of service users attending the centres.

The news follows reports in the Daily Echo that cuts made by Southampton City Council could spell the end of some day care facilities for the elderly.
