Arts project to help Keighley dementia patients

Posted on 28 April 2011

An arts project is setting out to help people with dementia paying for care, it has been reported.

Bradford District Care Trust and Opera North are collaborating on the project which will see a programme of workshops take place, reports the Keighley News.

Live musicians and singers will be involved in the project, which is designed to spark memories through music.

Rebecca Walsh, head of education at Opera North, told the newspaper: "We are delighted to be involved in this project as we are interested in exploring and demonstrating the power of the arts to provide a positive focus to people who face daily challenges."

This follows a collaboration by the Yamaha Music and Wellness Institute and the MIT Media Laboratory which will investigate whether music can help those with Alzheimer's.

Researchers will work towards developing a music composition tool for older people that prevents or lessens the progression of the condition.
