UK elderly among most web-savvy Europeans
Older people in the UK, who may be considering ways to pay for care, are some of the most prevalent internet users in Europe, a study has revealed.
Statistics collected by Eurostat show that 43 per cent of people aged between 55 and 74 in the UK use the internet often, nearly twice the EU average of 28 per cent.
The figures come after Age UK's myfriends online week, which encourages people to see how they can connect with their friends and family over the internet.
Linda Robson, ambassador for Age UK, said the figures are great news and show that many older people are seeing the benefits of stepping into the online world.
"I'd urge anyone who enjoys making the most of the internet to take the Age UK myfriends online week pledge and help teach someone who has never been online before to get involved," she added.
Last year, Age UK teamed up with BT to launch the search for the charity's 2011 Internet Champion of the Year.
