'Stealth' care home closure angers MP

A Newcastle MP has expressed anger after accusing social services chief at Staffordshire County Council of planning the closure of a residential home by "stealth", restricting the options of people choosing a care home in the county.

The Staffordshire Sentinel reports that Hillport House in Porthill has been quietly "wound down" by the local authority, who refused new admissions until its closure could be announced last month, according to Labour MP Paul Farrelly.

"Staff and their union representatives were, I understand, repeatedly assured that there were no plans to close the home and it is equally clear that proper consultation did not happen prior to the latest decision being announced," said Mr Farrelly in a letter to councillor Matthew Ellis, the newspaper reports.

Meanwhile, the Kent and Sussex Courier reports that a day care centre in Ramsgate will be replaced with two additional services at existing centres in Margate and Sandwich.
