People with dementia 'must eat well'
Eating a Mediterranean diet can be beneficial for people with dementia, who may be paying for long term care, according to an expert.
Professor June Andrews, director of the Dementia Services Development Centre at the University of Stirling, said a good diet is always crucial for older people, and those with dementia can sometimes forget to eat.
"The Mediterranean diet is often recommended, with fresh fruit and vegetables, and some oily fish and olive oil," she added.
"Some research indicates that a glass of wine or a cup of coffee a day helps some people."
Professor Andrews went on to say that it is also very important to ensure people with dementia are not getting dehydrated, and watching out for fat, salt and sugar can also help.
Recently, the Alzheimer's Society warned that as many as half a million people will have undiagnosed dementia in 2021, which may have an effect on the number of people considering ways to pay for care.
