Essex care home gives residents a say in expansion

Posted on 30 March 2011

Residents paying for care at an Essex home are helping staff to shape its future, shortly before it undergoes expansion.

Halstead Lodge, which currently houses 30 people and is managed by Care UK, is to be replaced with a 70-bed facility including a specialist dementia suite and a day centre for local people.

Residents, their relatives and staff will all take a hand in deciding aspects of the new home, such as naming suites and suggesting facilities they would like to see.

"We will put up photos of the new home around Halstead Lodge so that everyone can see how the project is developing," said Sara Goodwin, project manager for Care UK.

The new building will be in the community village style, featuring a shop, hairdressing salon, cafe and indoor village green.

This week, the Hertfordshire Mercury reported that a £2.5 million extension to Belmont View care home in Hoddesdon is due to begin next month.
